    THE BLACKWELL FAMILY

Burned county records have precluded research beyond James Blackwell and his wife, Susannah who resided on a large farm in Halifax County, VA, near the Bannister River. James died in 1812, and there were eleven heirs. We will follow the one who came to Floyd. Moses Blackwell married Susan Wall in 1786 in Halifax County. Of this union only three children known to us survived. They were James, Dionetia, and Moses, Jr. After Susan's death Moses, Sr. married twice more, Nancy Burkes (1799) and Drucilla Bowyer (1827) both in Bedford County and neither producing any heirs. Moses Jr. married Elizabeth (Betsy) Williamson 26 November 1821, and to this union were born: Robert Monroe, born 1822 and married Lucy Ann Shank in Floyd County; Mary Blackwell who married David Winter(s) in Floyd County (and was divorced which was unusual in that time period), she married secondly, Floyd Roop; Susan Elizabeth married Alan Epperly and eventually lived in Raleigh County, WV; James and Martin (named for Rev. Martin Walters), cannot be accounted for at this time. [additional information omitted]
