Per the National Archives for Military Records for Messenger Lewis: He was born in Greenwich, Connecticut in August of 1762. While a resident of Connecticut he enlisted in 1778 and served three months in Captain Jeremiah Knapp's Company in Colonel Palmer's Connecticut Regiment. He enlisted again in 1778 and served three months under the same officers. While living in Dutchess County, New York, he enlisted in 1779 and served three months in Captain Edward Oakly's Company in Colonel Phillips' New York Regiment. He enlisted in 1780 and served three months in Captain Isaac Springer's Company in Colonel Phillips' New York Regiment. He was allowed a pension. On his application executed October 29, 1833, he was living in Clay County, Kentucky, having moved there after the Revolution. The file contains no data relative to the soldier's family. This probably means that his wife died before he did as there is no record of a widow's pension. |
