Life swiftly passing and quickly ending by Cotton Mather
"A very short sermon, on the shortness of humane life. Preached after the death of Mrs. Mehetable Gerrish, the consort of Mr. Benjamin Gerrish, and the daughter of John Plaisted, Esq. Who died III d. XI m. 1715-16 [3rd day, 11th month, i.e., January, 1715-16]. In the twenty first year of her age"

  4.   Most sources suggest that Mehitable married Timothy Gerrish, but few give a date or other particulars. Source:Cutter, William Richard. Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts, p. 2:682, says: Children (6) of John & Mary (Pickering) Plaisted: 6. Mehitable, married Captain Timothy Gerrish, his first wife. Source:Stackpole, Everett Schermerhorn. Old Kittery and Her Families, p. 667, says that Mehitable, d/o John Plaisted and Mary Pickering, m. Timothy Gerrish. But note that Stackpole, on p. 444 that Col. Timothy Gerrish m. 14 Nov 1706 Sarah Eliot (and there are probate documents that show this to be so). She lived until 1770, and as Timothy was only 22 in 1706, born 1684, he was not likely to have married before this. Source:Maine Historical Magazine (Porter, Joseph W), p. 8:144, in an unsigned article on Roger Plaisted of Kittery, says that Mehetable m. Capt. Timothy Gerrish and that John Pickering in his will of 1721 named his deceased granddaughter Mehetable. This gets to the crux of the problem. The will does indeed name deceased granddaughter "Mehitable Gerrish" but never indicates her husband is Timothy. It is clear from the gravestone that this is an incorrect assumption.
