Maybell Lillian (Comstock) Wardwell, 88, died April 7 at Rutland Regional Medical Center. She was born in Plainfield on March 31, 1900, daughter of Mabel Comstock. Mrs. Wardwell received her education in Plainfield. She was married to Fred Wardwell on Dec. 19, 1919. He died on Dec. 3, 1917. She worked for New England Telephone Co. in Plainfield and for Bridgewater Telephone Co. She was a charter member of Geno/Robinson American Legion Auxiliary 11. A former resident of Sherburne, she served the town as auditor, school director and treasurer. She resided in Plainfield, West Bridgewater, Rutland and Bridgewater since 1974. Survivors include a son, Ivan Wardwell of New London, Ct.; four daughters, Elva Davis of Ludlow, Frederica Welch of Sherburne, Elnora Fadden and Joyce Phillips, both of Bridgewater; a sister, Della Rawlings of Tulsa, Okla.; 23 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. A son, Myron F. Wardwell, died Sept. 2, 1984. A funeral service was held April 10 at Church of Our Savior in Sherburne. Burial will be at a later date in Hillside Cemetery in West Bridgewater (sic). The Rev. Judson Pealer, rector at Trinity Episcopal Church in Rutland, officiated. Organist was Kedra Greaves. Bearers were Albert Davis, Proctorsville, Leroy Davis, West Rutland, Steven Phillips, Woodstock, Scott Wardwell, New London, Conn., Frank Wardwell, Rutland and William Gildersleeve, Bridgewater.
