Mabel is thought by some to be the sister of Francis Kendall because, in testimony regarding the estate of her second husband Henry Summers, she mentioned brother Francis Kendall, also by some to be d/o Henry and Gabriel (Armstrong) Kendall. Her son Israel had m. Francis Kendall's daughter Mary, so "Francis Kendall and Mabel (--) (Reed) Somers would be considered brother and sister." The names Mabel, Henry, Gabriel or Francis do not appear in her children or grandchildren.

It is claimed [by others] without proof that a John Kendall of England was the father of three or possibly four emigrants to New England, the earliest being Mable Kendall who married in England 1628 William Reade. Notes court testimony that includes statement that Francis Kendall was Mabel's brother [note: footnote lists several source, not yet discovered which is pertinent, none is Snow-Estes]. Notes intermarriages between Reads and Kendall [by context, as an indication of some kind of connection, not as explanation for brother], and notes Francis Kendall is witness and executor to Henry Summers will, he resigns the executorship, he is a witness to the 1675 settlement of the dispute with Henry Summers Jr.

    WILLIAM READ
    BIRTH: About 1587 (aged 48 on 18 July 1635 [Hotten 106)).
DEATH: Between 9 April 1656 (date of will) and 31 October 1656
    (probate of will).
    MARRIAGE: By about 1629 Mabel __ .
Comments: Nora E. Snow claimed that William Read's wife Mabel was sister of Francis Kendall, pointing to a deposition in which Mabel was supposed to have referred to Kendall as "her brother" [Snow-Estes 1 :324]. This deposition was made in the course of Mabel's dispute with her stepson Henry Summers, and the statement set forth by Nora Snow has not been found in those documents. Even if Mabel did make such a statement, though, it would not necessarily support the claimed relationship, inasmuch as he~ son Israel Read had married Mary Kendall, daughter of Francis, and according to the custom of the time this would be sufficient for Mabel to call Francis brother.
[Note: Snow-Estes is not the oldest source to assert this. Source:Pope, Charles Henry. Pioneers of Massachusetts (1620-1650), p. 440, published 1900, identifies Mabel as sister of Francis Kendall with comment "See Mdx. Files 13". Source: Reade Record, Vol. 5, p. 3 (1912), says, "The widow Mabel in her testimony in this case call Francis Kendall of Woburn 'her brother'.", and the similarity of these remarks to the wording used by Snow-Estes suggests this may be her source?]

After the children were grown, William and Mabel returned to England, and William died at Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1656, and his will was probated there.
