[edit] About Max CohenMax Cohen was born 10 July 1879 in Białystok, Poland [which was then part of Russia]. He arrived in America on the ship "Maasdam", which sailed from Rotterdam, Netherlands on 10 July 1895 and arrived in New York on 18 July 1895. It is likely that his wife Gussie was on the same ship, as she is listed as also being from Bialystok. Max filed his Declaration of Intention for American Citizenship on 20 September 1909 in Paterson, Passaic County, New Jersey. In it, he stated that his occupation was a "Silk Weaver", he was white with fair complexion, his height was 5' 9¾, that he weighed 148 pounds, had brown hair, brown eyes and had no visible distinctive marks. He stated that he was living at 27 Lane St., Paterson, New Jersey, and that he renounced any allegience and fidelity to Nicholas II, Emperor of Russia. In the 1910 U.S. Census, Max Cohen, age 29, is listed living in Paterson Ward 2, Passaic County, New Jersey with wife Gussie, age 25, son Sam, age 6 and Mother-in-Law Becky Gouder, age 60. His Petition for Naturalization was filed on 22 April 1915 in Los Angeles, California. In it, he stated that his wife was "Gussie Cohen" and that he had two children: Samuel, born 15 April 1904 in Paterson, New Jersey, who resided in Los Angeles, California; and Joseph, born 29 April 1912 in Los Angeles, California. In the 1916 Los Angeles City Directory, Max Cohen is listed selling "Dry Goods" at 849 S. Central Ave. In the 1930 U.S. Census, Max Cohen, age 50, was listed as living in Los Angeles with his wife Cussie [s/b Gussie], age 44 and sons Joseph, age 18 and L. Leo Cohen, age 9. Max stated that his occupation was a "Proprietor of Dry Goods", and the language spoken in the house was "Yiddish". Image Gallery
