Advisory

Advisory: Several Ancestry Member Trees, "A History of Monroe County, West Virginia", by Oren F. Morton and Find-A-Grave claim that this Matthew Alexander married an Elizabeth J. Marshall in 1797 [unsourced] and had several children born from 1800-1805 (some have earlier children born as early as 1793).
There IS a marriage record in [then] Monroe County, Virginia on 6 July 1820 for a Matthew Alexander and Elizabeth Marshall [Source: Virginia, Marriages, 1740-1850], but having children born in the early 1800's is obviously problematic with this marriage date. Needs additional research/sources. It is assumed that Matthew likely had a prior marriage to Elizabeth Marshall in 1820.

Morton lists the children of Matthew Alexander as follows:

    1. James (d. 1854), m. Ingabo
    2. Matthew
    3. John
    4. Catherine (m. Joseph Porter, 1807) - Catherine is too old (b. 1785) to have been a daughter of this Matthew Alexander, more research needed.
    5. Mary (m. Robert B. Wallace, 1808) - Mary was to old to have been a daughter of this Matthew Alexander. Other sources have her placed as the daughter of another Matthew Alexander (1746-aft. 1801) that married Jane Black.
    6. Andrew
    7. daughter (m. Robert Ross) Note: this was daughter Susan Alexander, who married Robert Ross 19 October 1824 in Monroe County, Virginia. Susan would have been too old to have been a child of Matthew Alexander and his likely second wife, Elizabeth Marshall.
    8. daughter (m. George W. Curry). Note: this was daughter Isabella Alexander who married George Curry 17 January 1842 in Monroe County, Virginia. Isabella was likely named after her grandmother Isabella Erskine.
