Mary Ward was baptised on 18th April 1806 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, daughter of Ann Ward, formerly Allam, and her husband Luke Ward, a carpenter. Mary was the couple's first child.

On 5th October 1826, aged 20, Mary married a miller and baker called John Housley. They went on to have ten children at Great Hale between 1827 and 1844, although at least two died as infants and another two sons died in their early twenties.

Mary and John lived at Great Hale in a house which belonged to Mary's maternal grandfather, John Allam. When he died in 1841 he left Mary their house, along with a "wind corn mill", bakehouse, granary, two pigsties, the garden between the house and the mill and the mill yard. Adjoining property was given to Mary's siblings, with a note that several of these properties were to continue to be allowed to use the pump and well which were on the land bequeathed to Mary. A few months later, the 1841 census finds Mary, John and their children living at Mill Yard in Great Hale. Mill Yard appears to have been immediately to the west of the parish church, and has subsequently been renamed Church Lane.

Mary's father died in 1844.

The 1851 census finds Mary, John and their children still living at Mill Yard. Mary's mother died in 1857.

Mary only survived her mother by a couple of years. She died in 1859, being buried at Great Hale on 29th June of that year. She was 53 years old. John survived her by seven years.
