"John Bettes or Betts … married about 1600 Mary _____, who was almost certainly the younger sister of John Bigge of Cranbrook, co. Kent, who was buried at Cranbrook 13 Aug. 1605. … family. Mary, widow of John Bettes, remarried at West Peckham 24 July 1621 John Bridger of West Peckham. She was mentioned as 'Aunt Mary Bridger' in the will of Smalehope Bigge of Cranbrook, 3 May 1638, and as 'Aunt Bredger' in the will of John Bigge of Maidstone, 17 Aug. 1640. As 'Mary Bettes alias Bridger', she consented, 15 May 1639, to the marriage of her son Robert Bettes to Margaret Topley. The date of her death is not known."
This woman's youngest known child was born 1615. The will of James Bigge (father of John Bigge) of Capell was written 31 May 1652 at which time his (apparently elder) daughter Mary was living. Thus she, if the wife of John Bettes, would have been at least age 53 at the birth of her youngest child; highly unlikely. There may not be sufficient evidence to establish her parentage, since the most likely, Coddington's argument, appears to fail due to the chronology.
