Mary Smith the Daughter of Seth Smith and Elisabeth Smith was Born at Chatham April 14th 1740. (The time of the Last five Childrens Birth [Hugh, Mary, Seth, Enos, and Elisabeth] was Entred by an account from their Father Seth Smith March 2 : 1749 p'r James Covel Town Clerk.)

She died of smallpox, in her fortieth year. [See the gravestone inscription, which says aged 40 (i.e., one year older than "in her fortieth year"). This extra year confirms the death in 1780, as does the record of her son Seth's death, which puts this record in conflict with her husband's second marriage reported to be 25 Oct 1779.]

Nickerson Gravestone. In April, 1909, the Editor copied the following inscription from a solitary gravestone on the Thomas Lothrop estate, Provincetown, Mass. "Mrs Mary Nickerson wife of Mr Seth Nickerson who died of the Small-pox May 31st 1780. Aged 40 years. Also Seth son of Mr Seth & Mrs Mary nickerson who died May 19th 1780. Aged 4 years & 8 Months." On the footstone is "Mrs Mary Nickerson 1780".

  4. Many sources have this date as 22 Aug 1740, such as Source:The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, p. 26:190, Ralph Smyth, of Hingham, Mass. Also, Source:Charles Smith and Rachel Amy Bryant, their ancestors and descendants, p. 240, which based on publication dates is probably derived from the NEHGR article. The date attributed to Mary bears a striking resemblance to the birthdate of her brother Seth which is 22 Aug 1743. Since Seth's birth immediately follows her birth in the vital records, it is undoubtedly a transcription error by the author.
