Mary Elizabeth Singleton was born in 1850 at Allington in Lincolnshire, the third of ten children of a coachman and groom named Robert Singleton and his wife Eliza Worth Bonser. Mary Elizabeth grew up in Allington, but by 1871 had left home and was working as a laundry maid at Ribston Hall in Yorkshire, home of John Dent Dent, a Liberal politician, who was Member of Parliament for Scarborough.

Mary Elizabeth's parents and siblings were still at Allington in 1871, but moved either late in 1871 or 1872, because by November 1872 they were living at Aston on Trent in Derbyshire, when Mary Elizabeth's mother Eliza died, aged 46.

The following year, aged 23, Mary Elizabeth was married to a gardener named John Warrior. They had probably met in Yorkshire, where she had been working in big houses, but they married in the Shardlow district in Derbyshire. Shardlow district covers Aston on Trent, so the couple probably married in Mary Elizabeth's father's parish as nominally her 'home' parish, even though she had not grown up there and ad left home before her parents moved there.

After their marriage, John and Mary Elizabeth returned to Yorkshire, and seemed to have moved around the north of the county following John's work as a gardener at various big houses. They had seven children together, one of whom had died before 1911.

John has not been traced after 1911 - there was another John Warrior of very similar age living nearby, making it hard to be certain which one is which. The most plausible death listed in the deaths index for Mary Elizabeth is in 1932 in the Barton upon Irwell district near Manchester - quite removed from North Yorkshire. Perhaps one of her children had gone to live there.
