Mary Shields was born on 7th April 1865 in New York, daughter of Margaret Shields, formerly Willis, and her husband Michael Shields, a tailor. Margaret and Michael were Irish immigrants. Mary appears to have been known as Marnie. She appears with her parents and siblings in the 1870 census in New York County.

On 13th September 1885, aged 20, Marnie married a bricklayer named Stephen Reid, who had arrived from Ireland a couple of years earlier. They had seven children together, but four died young. Each census from 1900 to 1920 finds them living at East 161st Street in the Bronx area of New York City. In August 1920 Stephen travelled to Ireland to visit his family. It is not clear whether Marnie travelled with him. He stayed for over a year, returning in November 1921.

The 1925 census finds Stephen and Marnie living at East 155th Street in the Bronx. By 1930 they had returned to East 161st Street. Despite being born in the United States, in 1933, aged 67, Marnie applied for American citizenship.

Stephen died in 1935, aged 81. Marnie survived him by thirteen years. She died in the Bronx on 20th April 1948, aged 83.
