Mary Shields was born in 1868 in New York, daughter of Michael and Margaret Shields, who were Irish immigrants. She was sometimes known as Marnie.

In 1885, aged about 17, she married a bricklayer named Stephen Reid, who had recently arrived from Ireland. They had seven children together, but four died young. Each census from 1900 to 1930 finds them living at East 161st Street in the Bronx. Mary has yet to be traced after 1920.
