Mary Ann Scott was born in Ladykirk, Berwickshire, daughter of Alexander Scott, master gardener at Ladykirk House, and Mary Robson. She grew up on the Ladykirk estate. In 1881 she and her sister Elizabeth were visiting Tweedmouth in England. In 1883, aged 24, she married Henry William Allway. By 1901, the couple was living in Kelso, next door to Mary's brother Charles.

Mary outlived Henry. She died in 1929, just short of her 70th birthday. At the time of her death, she was living with her brother Robert in Troon, Ayrshire.
