Mary's Death

  • THEORY A: Date of Death = bef 5 Mar 1672 (date of her father's death)
    • Source: Savage 3:46 who writes of the children of Edward Riggs, "it may be conclud[ed] that he had ... two d[aughter]s wh[o] live[d] to m[arry] but all d[ied] bef[ore] him."
    • Analysis: needed
    • Status: currently posted
  • THEORY B: Date of Death = 30 Oct 1694 in Dedham, MA.
    • Source: Based on the theory that Mary was married again to Samuel Miles 12 years after the death of her first husband. The theory is supported by the following records:
      • Dedham Marriage: "Samuell Miles & Mary Twitchell, was marryed, Febuary [sic] 3, 1684.
      • Medfield Marriage: TWICHELL, Mary and Samuel Meuls [?], Feb. 3, 1684-5.* *Intentions not recorded.
      • Dedham Death: "1694. Mary, the wife of Samuell Mills, decesed [sic] October 30."
      • Dedham Death: "1694. Samuell Mills, decesed [sic] January 7, 1694-5."
    • Analysis:
      • Riggs Surname Study posts Theory A, calling Theory B "highly questionable." No explanation given.
      • In 2009, Anderson in Riggs Revisited4 says Mary Twitchell, wife of Samuel Miles is "probably the widow" of Benjamin Twitchell.
