Mary Preston 1772-1824 Smithfield Prestons


Mary Preston b.10-7-1772 d.2-24-1824, eighth child of Col. William Preston and Susanna Smith, was born at "Greenfield" in Botetourt Co., Va. and died at her home in Sweet Springs, West Virginia. She married Capt. John Lewis b.8-24-1758 d.6-5-1823 of Sweet Springs in October 1793. Both are buried at Sweet Springs. They had 9 children:

1. Susanna Lewis married Mr. Henry Massie of Virginia. They had 5 children, of whom; Susan C. Massie married Rev. Frank Stanley of North Carolina. Mary Massie married John Hampton Pleasants, editor of the Richmond Whig. Their son, James Pleasants, was a lawyer of Richmond and their daughter the wife of Douglas H. Gordon of Baltimore. Henry Massie, of the Univ. of Virginia, married Miss Susan Smith of South Carolina and had 6 children. One of her children married her cousin, James Pleasants of Richmond. Eugenia Massie married Col. Samuel Gatewood of Bath Co.,Va. Her children intermarried with the Goodes and Taliaferros of Virginia and Texas. 2. Mary Lewis married Mr. Woodville, a lawyer of Botetourt, Va. Her son, James Woodville, a physician of Monroe Co., WVa, married his relative Mary Anne Breckenridge, daughter of Cary Breckenridge. 3. William Lewis married: 1st Miss Stuart (Stewart ?) of South Carolina. 2nd Miss Thompson 3rd Miss Letitia P.Floyd, a cousin. He had 8 children, not sure how many by whom. John Howe Peyton (1778-1847) on Sept. 4, 1821. They had 10 children: Susan Madison Peyton (1822-1901) married Judge John Baldwin. John Lewis Peyton (1824-1899) married Elizabeth Henrietta Washington. Anne M. Peyton died very young. Mary Preston Peyton b.4-18-1829 d.11-7-1907 married Robert Gray III of Harrisonburg, Va on July 30, 1850. They had 8 children: Susan Baldwin Gray (1852-1922) married Rockingham Paul of Roanoke, Va. They had one son, John Gray Paul. Anne M. Gray died in infancy. Isabella W. Gray (1857-1942). They had 8 children, of whom: John L. Cochran was a lawyer in the Confederate Army. James Cochran married Miss Elizabeth Brooke. Henry A. Cochran became a physician. Howe Peyton Cochran a captain in the Confederate Army, married his cousin, Miss Nannie Carrington. William L. Cochran an officer in the Confederate Army. Mary Lewis Cochran b.10-21-1840 d.4-26-1932 who married Capt. John Montgomery Preston II b.10-14-1838 d.9-27-1928 of Smith Co., Virginia. They lived at Seven Mile Ford Va. and had 8 children. 7. Benjamin Lewis married Miss Smith of S.C. 8. Thomas Lewis died young. 9. Pollydora Lewis married Mr. Gosse.
