Mary Ann McCarty was born about 1842/1843 in County Clare, Ireland into a farming family. Her father was Daniel Carty, a farmer and her mother was Margaret Ryan. Mary Ann arrived in New South Wales in about 1856 when she was about 13 or 14 which makes it likely that she arrived with her parents, but maybe by herself because at that time a significant number of Irish teenagers were arriving in Australia without their parents. Like so many Irish of the time Mary's surname was listed as both Carty and McCarty.

Mary Ann married Philip Malone in Sydney on the 12th February 1866 and they had nine children. She passed away from heart failure on the 21 st February 1920, at the time she was living with her daughter Sarah, at 9 Mundarrah St, Little Coogee, Randwick.
