Mary Matthew's origins are unknown. If the age quoted for her when she was buried is correct, she was born in about 1746. Her first confirmed sighting is on 27th August 1787, when she was about 41 years old. She was married at Heckington in Lincolnshire to a carpenter and millwright named John Allam, who was from the neighbouring parish of Great Hale. They had one daughter, Ann, baptised the following year at Great Hale.

Mary died in 1804, aged 58. She was buried at Heckington. John outlived her by many years, and married again four years later.
