Facts and Events
Mary is listed by many genealogies as the daughter of Nathaniel Littleton and Anne Southey but her dates of birth , death , marriage are somewhat in conflict. Nathaniel had a sister Mary as well and it is more likely that Mary is his sister and not his daughter so she had been placed as such here. Mary's will was dated 14 June 1691 and witnessed by Edward Marten, Tully Robinson, Richard Bayley (1) (2); At the time she was living at the house of Antony West, her grandson, at Merry branch (1) (2). Her legacies were to her grandson Anthony and his heirs her two slaves and if they should die first, the slaves were to go to her daughter Mathilda West (1) (2). Other legacies were to her son Charles Scarburgh, her daughter Tabitha Custis, son Edmund Scarburgh, grandson Edmund (son of Edmund), granddaughter Mary West, granddaughter Tabitha Custis, with other bequests to grandson Anthony West and daughter Mathilda West (1) (2) whom she named as executors of her will. By October 1691, she had become very unhappy with her son Charles and made a proviso to her will in which she revoked all bequests to Charles because he neglected her in her languishing sickness (1) (2). Her will was proved in Accomack Court 15 Dec 1691 where Tully Robinson was one of those who gave oath (1) (2). Sources: (1). Virginia Wills; GPC 1982 (975.5 P2v) p869-870 (2).
