Mary Ann Rebecca Hulse was born on 30th April 1886 in the southern suburbs of London at Peckham, which at that time was part of the parish of Camberwell, Surrey. She was the daughter of Mary Ann Hulse, formerly Barnard or Gittings, and a railway clerk named Edward Hulse. Young Mary Ann Rebecca appears to have been know as Rebecca.
Rebecca appears in the 1891 census living with her parents and siblings at 29 Burchell Road in the Peckham area of Camberwell (which had been transferred from Surrey to the new County of London in 1889). By 1901 they had moved to Deptford, where they lived at 218 Trundleys Road. By this time Rebecca was working as a tailoress. The family also had boarding with them a railway stoker named William Edwards, from Sidlesham in Sussex.
Six years later Rebecca and William would marry, on 10th November 1907 at St Mark's Church in Deptford. By this time William was working as an engine driver. When they married he was 32 and she was 21. Rebecca and William appear to have had two daughters, one in 1911 and one after the First World War in 1919. The 1911 census finds Rebecca and William and their two month old daughter living with Rebecca's parents at 82 Milton Court Road in Deptford. After the war they lived with Rebecca's parents at 12 Pagnell Street in Deptford.
Rebecca's father died in 1919. Rebecca and William continued living with her mother at 12 Pagnell Street until at least 1924. They moved away some time between 1924 and 1926; the 1926 electoral roll shows Rebecca's mother still there, but not Rebecca and William.
By the outbreak of the Second World War, Rebecca and William had moved to Bognor Regis on the Sussex coast, close to where William was from. They lived at 81 Hawthorn Road and William worked as an engine driver for the Southern Railway.
William died in 1956, aged 81.
Rebecca survived him by about seventeen years. She died in 1973, aged 87.
