Facts and Events
The marriage of Mary to a ROCHESTER is tenuous, and is based on a finding from the 1910 census. In it, the entry for William Lacy PHELPS is found with a William ROCHESTER and his wife Evie. William Lacy is listed as being the “uncle” of William ROCHESTER. I had assumed that the connection was through the wife, Evie. However, in reviewing the notes of that entry, William ROCHESTER is shown as having a mother born in Mississippi. William Lacy’s then deceased wife, Mary Lillian HAUGHTON, had a sister, Mary R. HAUGHTON, who was born in Mississippi in 1847. While this does not make him a blood relative, William Lacy would have been the “uncle” with Lillian as the “aunt.” For this reason, I suspect that Mary R. HAUGHTON had married a fellow named ROCHESTER, and they in turn had a son William. Later research into Lousiana marriage records shows that Mary R. HAUGHTON did indeed marry Samuel ROCHESTER, so the linkage to William ROCHESTER is established., Mary R. Haughton married Major Walter V. Crouch on July 5, 1877 at Lafayette Presbyterian Or Fulton St. Church, New Orleans, LA. She was born September 19th, 1846; died July 22, 1899 and was burried in the Lafayette Cemetery, New Orleans, LA. References
