Mary Ann Edwards was baptised on 27th March 1870 at Sidlesham in Sussex, daughter of Sarah Ann Edwards, who was 24 when Mary was born and still lived with her parents at the hamlet of Chalder in Sidlesham. Mary appears in the 1871 census living with her mother, grandparents and three uncles at Chalder. Mary's grandfather died in 1872. The 1881 census finds Mary still living with her mother, grandmother and two uncles in Sidlesham, although they had moved from Chalder to Street End. The 1881 census notes that Mary's mother suffered from epileptic fits.
By 1891 Mary had left home and was working as a domestic servant for a solicitor and his wife at Mitcham in Surrey. By 1901 Mary was working as housemaid for a butcher and his family at 7 Gledow Terrace in Kensington. She stayed with them for over ten years, still living there in 1911. Mary has yet to be traced after 1911.
