Mary "Polly" Dugger was born ca 1806 in Ashe Co, NC. She was named as a child of David in the 1915 article in "A History of Watauga County". I don't know if there is any additional proof available.

According to John Preston Arthur, "Polly" married David Howell. I've tried to find more about them, but have failed to find very much so far.

There were Howell's in the region, so it seems reasonable that Mary Dugger married one, and also consider the fact that many of the Duggers were buried in the Howell Cemetery, so it all adds up.

I did not find David Howell listed on the Ashe County census until 1840. The ages of their children were all under 10, so possibly married ca 1830 or after.

  • 2 females 5-9 (1830/1835)=1-Unknown daughter; 2-Unknown daughter
  • 2 females 0-4 (1835/1840)=1-Matilda Howell (c1835); 2-Rhoda Howell (c1838) daughters

They were not found in Watauga County for the 1850 census (No Howells listed there at all). I didn't find them in Tennessee either. I checked a few other states and didn't find them.

They were "back" in Watauga for the 1860 census.
