Edwina suffered from circulatory problems for several years. She was diagnosed with Berger's disease about five years before her death. She suffered from high blood pressure for many years. Cause of death was attributed to a blood clot which traveled to her heart. She had the first "heart attack" on Thursday, June 19, 1984 and was taken by ambulance to Haywood County Hospital. She spent a comfortable weekend undergoing tests and evaluation. On Monday, June 22, as her bed was being cranked up for breakfast, she suffered the final attack. She remained in a coma until her death.
