Mary Emma Bond was born on 21st December 1876 in the parish of Bere Ferrers, Devon. She appears in the 1881 census living with her parents and siblings at Tuckermarsh in Bere Ferrers parish. By 1891 she was working as a domestic servant for a butcher in the small town of Bere Alston (which is also in Bere Ferrers parish). She was still working as a domestic servant in 1901, at Collins Farm in Bere Ferrers.

In 1902 Mary married a John Curner at Devonport. For whatever reason they do not appear to have stayed together.

From about 1906 onwards Mary lived with a postman named John Edwin Harry, a widower whose first wife had died early in 1906. Mary and John had two daughters together; Lily in April 1907 and Rosie in June 1908. The 1911 census finds the family living together at 89 Cambridge Street in Plymouth, where they had two rooms. Mary appears under her maiden name and described as housekeeper.

In 1929 Mary's elder daughter was married, and Mary's first grandchild was born the following year. Her other daughter married in 1934. Later that year Mary and John married - presumably Mary's first husband had died and they were finally free to marry. However John did not live long after their marriage, dying early in 1935 aged 71.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, Mary was living with her daughter and son in law at 9 Nelson Street in Plymouth.

Mary married for a third time in 1941, aged 64. Her third husband was John Lucas.

Mary died in 1957, aged 80.
