Turpin, Martin - born 1/25/1761 in Rockingham [then Augusta] County, Virginia; entered service 1778 in Greenbrier County, Virginia, where he resided, in Virginia regiment; granted Pension 1833 in Pulaski County, Kentucky as Martin Sr. F-S30752, R2428.

    State of Kentucky Pulaski Circuit Court and Pulaski County Sct.
    On this 15th day of April 1833 personally appeared in Open Court before the Circuit
    Court for Pulaski County aforesaid holden by the Honorable John L Bridges Circuit Judge now sitting as a court Martin Turpin Senior aged Seventy-two years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated, that in the year 1778 the month not now recollected while a resident of Greenbrier County State of Virginia, he was drafted to serve a three month tour in the militia and served in the company of Captain Thomas E Wright in the Regiment of Colonel James Henderson and was ordered to and stationed at William Laferty's on New River to guard and protect the frontiers of Virginia that he served out the time, was dismissed, but received no written discharge. Afterwards while a resident of said County of Greenbrier in the fall or latter part of the year 1780 or 1781 from old age & loss of memory he is unable to state certainly in which of those years – he was drafted for a six months Tour to go to Richmond Virginia in the company of the said Captain Thomas E Wright and while on the march to said last mentioned place, he enlisted in the company of Captain Matthew Clay of the regular Army and under him served out the whole of the six months in the capacity of Bowman or washing man [?]1 having been directed to perform that service by the said Clay – and during the time or most of it was stationed at the Barracks or head quarters kept and held at Powhatan old Courthouse and at the expiration of the said six months was dismissed and received a discharge signed as he now recollects by Colonel Phebecker [Colonel Christian Febiger] who was in command of the Regiment but which has long since been lost or destroyed. He does not now recollect any other of the officers that were engaged in this service the said Martin Turpin further states he was born in what is now Rockingham County Virginia on the 25th day of January 1761 moved from there to Greenbrier where he first entered the service of the United States from there in the year 1792 he removed to Madison County Kentucky from there to Garrard County from there to Pulaski County, where he now resides, he has a record of his age taken and copied from the family Bible of his Father he has no Documentary evidence of his Service, he believes he can prove his service in part positively and the residue [word written over and indecipherable] by Drewry Hain [sic, Drury Ham] of Lincoln County and Joseph West of Wayne County State of Kentucky, he is known to Martin Owens a clergyman who is the nearest clergyman resident of Pulaski County to his present residence and to George S Benton resident of his present neighborhood who can testify as to his character for veracity and their belief of his Services as a soldier of the Revolution.
    He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State or territory.
    Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid.

    [Drewry Ham, 2 73, and Joseph West,3 71, gave the standard supporting affidavit; in addition they stated "…we do know that he served the three months Tour mentioned by him under Captain Thomas Wright we were also engaged in the same service & was in the same company – and was stationed with the said Martin Turpin Senior at William Laferty's on New River; we do further know that he was again drafted for six months as he states to go to Richmond Virginia and on the March to Richmond enlisted in the Regular Army under Captain Matthew Clay and we understood that he served out the term of six months and we believe he did."

    [Veteran was pensioned at the rate of $30 per annum commencing March 4th, 1831, for nine months service as a private in the Virginia militia.]
