Fireman M. Joseph "Joey" Sakers, 41, of the Lester section of Tinicum Township, died Aug. 1 of an accidental drowning in Tinicum. Born in Ridley Park, he was a lifetime resident of Lester. He received his diploma from Interboro School District. After graduating from Elwyn. He was the recipient of the prestigious Davison Award. Mr. Sakers was employed by the Lagoon in Essington for 13 years. He was a life member of the Lester Fire Co. An avid sports fan, Mr. Sakers participated in various leagues as a young man and especially enjoyed watching the Flyers and Eagles. He was a computer buff, spending countless hours online. Mr. Sakers was known and loved by the community and was often seen on his bicycle, waving and greeting everyone he saw on his way to work or to the firehouse. He was the son of the late Robert and Anna Boeckem Sakers. Survivors: Son, Dennis of Eddystone brother, Robert Sakers of Lester sisters, Brenda Ober, Mary McDevitt, both of Norwood. Service: 11 a.m. Saturday at the Toppitzer Funeral Home, 2900 State Road, Drexel Hill. Visitation: After 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial: Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill.
