Martin Jacob was from Preussdorf, Alsace . . . .Leaving his native village in the summer of 1753, he embarked at Rotterdam in the ship ‘’Richard and Mary,’’, arriving at Philadelphia on the 17th of September of that year. (In Philadelphia Archives name in one place is given as John Martin Jacob). Martin always worte his name "Jacob", and so did his son Henry until late in life. "Jacobs" seems to be an Anglicized form. . . .

Martin Jacobs settled first on the Carroll tract in Frederick County, Md., between Fairfield and Emmittsburg. Thence he removed in 1761 to the locality of Jacob’s church, where he secured a tract of land that continued in his possession and that of his descendants a hundred and twenty years. He gave to this tract the name Martin’s Fabian. Its area was 103 acres. . . . The survey was made . . . August 18, 1760, the patent is dated February 10, 1761 [from he Governor of Maryland] . . . [but was on the Pennsylvania side of the Mason Dixon lin when it was surveyed]. . . . He subsequently secured three other tracts, viz., Peter’s Goodwill, . . . February 9, 1770, forty-four acres . . .; Jacobsburg, original patent, June 14, 1787, fifty acres; and Good Hope, original patent, September 21, 1790, eighteen acres. . . . Good Hope is in Maryland, and . . . . the site of the Church and burial ground. . . . This land was presented to the congregation by Martin Jacobs in 1799. . . .

The old pioneer died in 1803 and is buried at Jacobs Church. . . .

Martin Jacob was married twice. His first wife, Barbara Musselman, was a member of the family of that name still represented in the vicinity of Fairfield, Adams County, Pa. To this union three sons were born, viz., George, Henry, and Michael. As his second wife, he married a widow, Mrs. Anna Barbara Fiehls, who survived him eleven years, dying in 1814. . . .
