LAST DELIVERY HAS BEEN MADE.--Mail Carrier Martin Fulmer Answers the Final Summons. --Has Many Friends--Unite With His Immediate Family in Mourning His Death -- Next to Oldest Carrier in Service.--
Martin Fulmer, the well-known letter carrier, died at his home at No.1016 West Fourth street Saturday afternoon. Attended by is grief-stricken wife, and relatives, his spirit took its flight about 5 o'clock. His death was due to abdominal dropsy from disease of the liver. Nearly three weeks ago Mr. Fulmer, who was letter carrier No. 1, was compelled to abandon the route which he had carried for many years, and take to his bed. For several months previous to that time he had been in poor health, but with that indomitable energy and perserverance which was ever characteristic he remained at his post of duty. During his summer vacation he visited the country and returned greatly improved in health. It did not last, however, and he gradually succumbed to the disease.
Martin Fulmer was born in Canton about fifty years ago. His early childhood was spent in attending the public schools. Upon completing his education his parents removed toa farm four miles south of the city, where they remained four years. Returning to the city Martin learned the carpenter trade. He was employed for a number of years in the wood department of C. Aultman & Co. Later he took the position of collector for the Caton Gas company, where he remainded until the fall of 1885. His STERLING INTEGRITY and genial ways then secured for him the appointment of letter carrier No. 6 and he entered upon his new work September 10, 1885 under Postmaster A. Vignos. At that time the delivery of mail by carriers was a new thing in Canton, having been in existence but a year or two before his appointment. Mr. Fulmer made the sixth letter carrier for the Canton postoffice, as there were but five carriers granted when the system was established. He served but nine months, being removed with the other Republican carriers June 30, 1886. He was reappointed by Democratic Postmaster William Archinal March 30, 1889, after an absence of less than three years, and from that time until his last sickness continued to serve Uncle Sam in the capacity of letter carrier. He was the second oldest carrier in duration of service in the city, having been employed nine years, nine months and twenty days. As a letter carrier he was ever courteous, affable and accommodating and made steadfast friends wherever taken by his route. Faithful in the performance of his duties, kind hearted and genial his FRIENDS WERE COUNTLESS. His associates in the local postoffice knew him as a tried and true friend, one who will be sadly missed, and whose memory will be ever dear. Those citizens who met him in daily association mourn with the bereaved relatives in their loss.
Mr. Fulmer was united in marriage April 13, 1896 to Miss Anna M. Marburger. He was a fond and devoted husband, and their brief married life was always a happy one. Two brothers and two sisters survive. They are Volney Fulmer of No. 941 North Cleveland avenue, Andrew J. Fulmer, of No. 1132 Henry avenue, Mrs. Elizabeth Yant, of No. 1237 South Market street, and Mrs. Henry Smith of Moultrie, Columbiana county. Mr. Fulmer was a member of Canton lodge No. 80 F and AM.
The funeral services will take place from the house Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The remains will be interred in Westlawn cemetery.
