Biography

Martha Smith, daughter of William Henry Smith and Martha Clare, was born on 2 October 1880 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Martha Smith married John Murphy Daniels, son of Samuel D. Daniels and Jane Ann Murphy, on 9 May 1899 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The ceremony was performed by Reverend J. N. Butler. Their first child, John, was born in September 1899 in Philadelphia and died on 18 January 1900 in Philadelphia. Martha Daniels and her husband John appeared on the census of 1900 in the household of her parents at 1220 Mercy Street, Philadelphia. Son Walter was born on 13 November 1900 in Philadelphia. Son Thomas was born on 27 August 1902 in Philadelphia. The family was living at 1141 Winton Street between 1904 and 1906. Daughter Jennie, usually known as "Jean", was born on 23 November 1904 in Philadelphia. Son John was born on 24 May 1906 in Philadelphia and died in 1908. Daughter Ruth was born on 21 January 1910 in Philadelphia and died in March 1910.

By 1910, John and Martha had three surviving children, Walt, Tom, and Jean. In 1910, Martha and John were renting a house at 2416 South Clarion Street, Philadelphia. Martha's brother George D. Smith and her mother, Martha Smith, were also living with the family. Martha eventually became active in the Boy Scout Mothers and the Missionary Society. The family attended Messiah Reformed Church. Daughter Martha was born on 2 May 1911 in Philadelphia. Son George was born on 23 September 1913 in Philadelphia. Daughter Laura was born on 22 October 1915 in Philadelphia. Martha's son, George W. Daniels, died on 5 March 1917 in Philadelphia. Son Robert was born on 20 September 1917 in Philadelphia. Another son was born on 7 August 1919 in Philadelphia.

Martha and John appeared on the census of 1920 with their children at 2617 South Jessup Street, Philadelphia. Daughter Alice was born on 21 February 1921 in Philadelphia. Martha's daughter, Martha A. Daniels, died on 7 March 1921 in Philadelphia of diabetes. Between 1930 and 1934, the family lived at 2220 South Woodstock Street, Philadelphia. Martha and John appeared on the census of 1930 with their children Tom, Bob, Bill, Alice and Laura at 2220 South Woodstock Street. Martha's husband, John Murphy Daniels, died on 26 August 1934 in Philadelphia.

On October 2, 1942, her 62nd birthday, Martha suffered a stroke while washing the awnings. She was taken to Philadelphia's Methodist Hospital, where she died 8 hours later. Martha Smith Daniels was buried on 6 October 1942 Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
