Mrs. Mattie Slater

Mrs. Mattie Slater, 72, widow of John Slater, whose name has been a household word in temperance circles in this county and in church connections for many years, died at 4:40 Saturday afternoon at her home, 221 Belmont NW. She had been ill of complications for some time and in failing health for two years, but was bedfast for only two weeks at the end.
Mrs. Slater was deeply interested in the boys' class at First Baptist church which she taught for years. Despite her frail physical condition she continued her ministrations to prisoners in the city jail, in whom she took warm personal interest, as long as she was able to make visits to the jail.
Mrs. Slater was born in Champion township, the daughter of John R. and Lucy Latimer Shafer. She spent practically all of her life in Warren, was a member of the First Baptist church and of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. She is survived by one brother John R. Shafer, Warren; three half brothers and a half sister, Frank Kilpatrick, Champion; James and Ned Kilpatrick, and Mrs. Burr Thompson, Warren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. this evening at the W.J. White Funeral Home, and the funeral will be held there at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Interment in Oakwood Cemetery.
