Information on Martha (Harris) Wilson Cowden

Martha (Harris) apparently married 1st, Samuel Wilson, who died in 1760 (she was named in his will, below), then 2nd, Samuel Cowden, abt. 25 Feb. 1762 (marriage bond for Samuel Cowden in Augusta County), and according to the will of Samuel Cowden of Augusta County, VA and Mecklenburg County, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, 1782 (more research necessary to determine which Samuel Wilson in Augusta County she married 1st):

  • Page 391.--28th May, 1760. Samuel Wilson's will, of Staunton--Wife, Martha, to educate the children; oldest daughter, Elizabeth Wilson; daughter, Martha. Executors, John and Thos, Wilson, and wife Martha, or any two. Teste: James Hughes, Robt. Reed. Wm. Preston. Proved, 19th August, 1760, by the witnesses. Thomas and Martha qualify, with Jno. and Robt. Wilson. Teste: H. Churchill.
  • Will of Samuel Cowden, being very sick.. to my brother Walter Cowden by horse & saddle & wearing apparel & what grain I have at Robert Harris & what yarn properly belongs to me at my brother Robert Cowdens or Capt. Samuel Pickens & also the Buckskins at William Wileys; to my sons Walter & John Cowden begot on the body of Martha Wilson all & every part of my Estate only what is excepted to be between them equally divided; my brothers Walter Cowden & James Harris of Reedy Creek, exrs. 28 March 1782.   • NOVEMBER 26, 1770. (156) Elizabeth Wilson, aged 16, orphan of Samuel Wilson, chose Alexr. McClenachan her guardian, and he is appointed guardian for Martha, her sister. (Note: Elizabeth Wilson is the eldest daughter named in Samuel Wilson's will above).
  • Vol. 1 - MAY 20, 1779. - (623) On petition of Patrick McDavid, Commissioners to lay off dower to Martha Cowden, widow of Samuel Wilson, deceased, in half the lot in Staunton and the outlet belonging.
  • Page 282.--19th May, 1780. Martha ( ) Cowdon, late Martha Wilson, widow and executrix of Samuel Wilson. deceased, of Staunton, to Patrick McDavid, grants a lease of which Samuel was seised by deed, 3d November, 1752, lot No. 4, by the end of the bridge. Teste: Alex. Sinclair, Jacob ( ) Grass, Valentine Cloninger.
  • Page 106.--17th July, 1785. John Griffin to Martha Cowdon, filed in suit, Cowdon vs. Handly, 19th August, 1791. In 1775 John gave up to Martha his right to the house now occupied by her and Dennis Callahan, which he was entitled to in right of his wife, Elizabeth Griffin, and she gave up her right in lot 4 sold by John to Robert Reed.

John Griffin and Elizabeth, his wife, late Elizabeth Wilson (daughter of Samuel Wilson and Martha). Involves lot 4, in Staunton. Martha pleads infancy. Martha Wilson, daughter of Samuel, married Patrick McDivit. (Note: the "Patrick McDivit" is no doubt the same "Patrick McDavid" listed in the 1779 record listed above that married Martha Wilson, daughter of Samuel and Martha Wilson).
