- ↑ LUCY v MARTHA
The area was also quarrelsome part of the street where the virtuous poor feuded with neighbours of whom they could not approve. In early 1901, Lucy Henry, wife of Reuben, whose premises at No.576 were under scrutiny, fought a running battle with her next door neighbour, Martha Todman. The women appeared in court twice, each accusing the other of giving offence. The Court did not take the matter too seriously but the frustration of the two women, trapped in their poverty comes through clearly after almost a century. The tale of Martha, enraged by rubbish that appeared in her backyard and of an attack by a mallet and foul words when she accosted the mother of the culprits, who continued to overturn dustbins and to muddy clean washing, was matched by Lucy's indignation when her face was slapped, her children accused and young Joey, aged nine, threatened with physical punishment.
