City Pioneer Carpenter Dies at 80

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday for Mark A. Carpenter, 80, who for nearly four decades has been a familiar figure in Ukiah. Born here on July 26, 1887, of pioneer parents, he had spent his life in California and this community. Until about two months ago, when he was hospitalized, it was his custom to walk about the main business streets, stopping to do errands and to talk with friends he had known from his boyhood. He died Saturday in a Ukiah hospital.

The services will be at the Eversole Mortuary with the Rev. Harold Watkins officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in Ukiah cemetery.

Mr. Carpenter was graduated in 1906 from Ukiah high school and then went to Stanford University from which he received his law degree in 1910. He passed the California Bar Association examinations that same year.

His great uncle Hale McCowen, the father of the late Superior Judge Hale McCowen, was at that time and for many years the clerk of Mendocino County and the young Mark Carpenter joined him as a deputy and served the county for 32 years filling the offices of clerk of the board and county purchasing agent in later years.

In high school and at Stanford, Mr. Carpenter took an active interest in football, playing on some of the teams and managing others.

Mr. Carpenter was the son of Grant Carpenter of Potter Valley. His father, a native of Potter Valley, and a twin sister Grace Carpenter Hudson, who later became a famous painter, were the first twins born in Potter Valley. She was the wife of the late Dr. John W. Hudson of this city. It was through her study and portraiture of the Pomo Indians fo this Valley that she became recognized.

On the death of the Hudsons, Mr. Carpenter inherited their unusual home, Sun House, on S. Main Street and he and his wife Melissa had made their home there during the passing years. It became the mecca for those seeking his aunt's paintings in which interest was recently revived due to discovery of some of her sketches. Mr. Carpenter handles the sale of these through an agent. He was one of the few original remaining pioneers of this city.

Besides his wife Melissa, he leaves a niece Patricia Rabinovitz of Michigan and his stepmother Mrs. Grant Carpenter in Los Angeles.
