Margaret Jane was born on Jun 9 1852 in , Wetzel, VA (WV). She died on Nov 7 1896 in , Mason, WV. According to pension file of John Snyder, Margaret Jane was called Jane. She was married to John Eden Snyder (son of William Snyder and Ellender Hall) on Aug 9 1888. John Eden Snyder (20) was born on Aug 10 1843. Mason County, WV Cemetery Inscriptions, Vol 3 compiled by Juanita K. Burdette, 1973 records birth year as 1845. He died on Feb. 1, 1929 in Mason, WV. Obituary: CIVIL WAR VETERAN ANSWERS LAST CALL John E. Snyder, a Civil War Veteran and longtime resident of this section, died at his home near Elmwood, Union District, of this County, Friday, February 1st, after a long illness. Mr. Snyder had been confined to his bed the greater part of the time for the past year. Mr. Snyder was born August 10, 1843, near Kingwood, Preston County, West Virginia. He came with his brothers and sister to Mason County before the Civil War. He served through the war in the Union Army in Company "H", W. Va. Infantry. He is survived by his widow, Mary Snyder, one sister, Mrs. Julia Casto, three children by a former marriage, Mrs. James Sullivan, London, Ohio, Mrs. Joe Kimberling, Clarksburg, W.Va., and H.P Snyder at home, eight grandchildren and one foster-child Henry E. Snyder. Mr. Snyder became a Christian early in life and in his young manhood was a local preacher. He was a faithful Christian and worker in the Sunday School and Church in the community until failing health prevented. He will be missed by his friends and neighbors, who join in extending sympathy to the family. According to the stories told by John Snyder to his son, Holly, and recounted by Holly to his children: "John, Elias, Nimrod, and Julia walked from Kingwood to Mason County before the Civil War." Julia could only have been about eight years old. A Thomas and Elizabeth Snyder were already living near Elmwood in Mason County at that time. This suggests that the Snider children (evidence suggests that they were born Snider) were coming to Mason County to live with relatives. John Snyder stuttered. Holly once convinced John's grandson, John Graden Sullivan, to stutter along with Grandfather John while he prayed over their meal. John did so and Grandfather John spanked him with his cane when the meal was over. It did no good to protest that Grandfather John's son, Holly, had instigated the event. Declaration for Pension for the State of West Virginia County of Mason says John E. Snyder enrolled about July 5th 1861 a private in Company B of the 4th Regiment of West Virginia volunteers (West Virginia was not a state yet???) and was discharged about the 15th of April 1862. He seems to have been on a march from Mason County and was sick with fever from effects of exposure. He was unable to serve for 60 days and was therefore given a Certificate of Disability for Discharge on April 15, 1862. However, he reenlisted as a private in Company H, 13th Regiment of West Virginia Infantry Volunteers on the 19th day of November of 1862. He was discharged on the 30th day of May 1865. The Declaration for Pension for the State of West Virginia declares he was born on or about the 10th day of August 1841. The document bears his signature and is dated 30 May 1912. There seemed to have been some confusion as to age because a notation is made that his age was changed on this document from 68 years of age to 70 years of age and the year of birth changed from 1843 to 1841. He wasdischarged at Cumberland, MD from the hopsital there. He seems to have been sick a good deal. There does not appear to be any information concerning being wounded. In April of 1863 he is absent and listed as sick. Then he is in Gallipolis Hospital and appears as absent from the muster rolls from July to October 1864. Then appears to have been absent March 2 thru May in the Claryville, Maryland Hospital until his discharge on May 3.
