She was a kind, loving and gentle person who worked hard. Said she quit school at thirteen to take care of the family when her mother died. Loved to listen to the John Phillip Sousa Band play at the Amusement park near their home on the shore of Lake Erie. Told of the ship wreaks on Lake Erie and the items that could be salvaged. Said the Lake was very treacherous because it was so shallow. Didn't indicate how the children acquired property on Wendorff St. (later 143rd) but many of them built homes there. Waddy told me when he built he salvaged the dance floor from the amusement park and moved it to the house in one piece to make the main floor in the house. Lulu had very definite dislike for alcohol, coffee, Coca-Cola and fried foods. Did not cook a large variety but what she did she did well. I don't remember my mother ever being sick. She was hit by a car late one evening at Jackson and 165th in Hammond but was only down a short time. She liked to walk and for many years walked the three blocks from or to the store twice a day, summer and winter, night and day.
