A SHORT HISTORY: Lucinda (Letty) Alexander. with references

A number of details remain unknown regarding the first of the two wifes of Jennings NIX.

Lucinda Alexander was born in Pickens District, South Carolina in 1803, the daughter of Daniel D. and Mary Alexander. She married Jennings in 1824, Pickens District, South Carolina. They had two sons, a daughter, followed by two additional sons. The 1850 census shows this family;

KNIX, JENNIGS

	State:	SC	Year:	1850
County:	Pickens County	Record Type:	Federal Population Schedule
	Township:	Western Division	Page:	374
Database:	SC 1850 Federal Census Index

Western Division of the district of Pickens South Carolina enumerated by me, on the 27th day of July 1850, Thomas Lee

It is not possible to read the page number on the top right corner of the sheet because the sheet is placed so that section of the sheet is cut off. If you view the census at <ancestry.com> It is, however, image #6 of 160 in the Western Division of Pickens District, South Carolina, 1850 Federal Census, 27th day of July 1850. The census index gives the page # as 374, but this sheet is before that, maybe #372 or #373.

Line #13, Dwelling #46, Family #47 Jennings Knix, age 50, sex M, Farmer, $600, born Georgia, Line #14 Lucinda, Age 50, F, born Georgia, Line #15, Family #48, David Alexander, age 86 M, none, born Virginia, Line #16, Mary Alexander, age 85, F, born Virginia, Line # 17, William Alexander, age 17, M, born South Carolina,

Line #18, Dwelling #47, Family #49, Ts. Alexander Knix, age 19, M, Farmer, born South Carolina, Line #19, Elizabeth Knix, age 16, F, born South Carolina.

There is no doubt that this is Jennings and Lucinda, and it would appear that the second family would be her parents, The ages are off from what other researchers have by four years, but so are Jennings and Lucinda.

The other family would be Thomas Alexander NIX, the youngest son of Jennings and Lucinda and his young wife of one year, Elizabeth Gassaway, daughter of William W. Gassaway and Cosly (Cosby) Curtis.

Two questions: 1)Who is the William Alexander age 17 on line # 17, I looked for a grandson of David and Mary, but could not find one that matches. and 2) Can I assume that this David Alexander is the same as the Daniel D. Alexander b 1760, and Mary Unknown that I had previously assumed as the parents of Lucinda and the in-Laws of Jennings? Would his full name be Daniel David Alexander???

The 17 year old William could be, the son of James, Grandson of Thomas S. and GGson of Daniel David. Thomas S. was the older brother of Lucinda.

Both of her parents died by early 1852 and the family left for Alabama soon after that.

A SHORT HISTORY; Lucinda (Letty) Alexander

Lucinda Alexander was born in Pickens District, South Carolina in 1803, the daughter of Daniel D. and Mary Alexander. She married Jennings in 1824, Pickens District, South Carolina. They had two sons, a daughter, followed by two additional sons. The 1850 census shows this family with none of the children at home, but the youngest son Thomas Alexander and his young wife of less than a year, Elizabeth Gassaway were living next door. Lucinda's parents; 86 year old Daniel, and 85 year old Mary were members oh the NIX household. Both parents died soon after the census, and Jennings soon moved West to Alabama.

In December of 1850 the estate of Daniel Alexander Sr. was settled with his son Micajaj as the administrator. Letty NIX received the sum of $25.00.

The family records of Jennings Nix and Lucinda (Letty) Alexander are also found in the "Alexander's of Upper SC", page 425.

Additional information on the Alexander family was obtained from the Gardner Family History; by Vicki Dabb She quotes "Alexander Families of Upper South Carolina" by Peggy Burton Rich, which in turn quotes the 1790 census of Rockingham, County, North Carolina, the 1800. 1810, 1820, and 1840 census records of the Pendeleton District of South Carolina, and the 1850 census records of Pickens County, South Carolina. Also quoted the Pickens County South Carolina Deed Book C-1, page 279, dated 13 April 1815. This record shows where Daniel Alexander donated land for the Keowee Baptist Church. Also quoted estate records of Daniel Alexander. He is buried in the Daniel Alexander Family Cemetery, Shady Grove Section , Pickens County, South Carolina.

The South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research SCMAR, Volume IX Number 1, Winter, 1981 Contains a request for Information (page #56) on parents of Daniel Alexander born ca 1764 in Virginia and listing among his children "Letty NIX".

An additional bit of family lore is found in the "HISTORY OF THE KEOWEE RIVER BAPTIST CHURCH II" by Frederick Van Clayton Transcribed by: Lois E. Branch July 5, 2000 An excerpt from this document shows:

We know that Lucinda came to Blount County Alabama, and that she died a few years latter. We know none of the details of her death and at this time I do not know the site of her grave. However there is a strong possibility that she is buried at a home site on the first 40 acres that Jennings purchased in Alabama. Jennings purchased 40 acres described as NENE HUNTSVILLE 11S 3E 23 with an Issue Date: August 01, 1853. This forty acres joins a forty acre parcel latter purchased by John R. Ellison. Jennings purchased 40 acres, issued August 01, 1853 and John R. Ellison was issued an adjoining 40 acres on March 01, 1858, but John R. Ellison died prior to the date that the sale was finalized. Jennings and "Tempy" Ellison, the widow were married on 17 Nov. 1856. I can vaguely remember my Grandfather telling me that he suspected that Jennings and Lucinda originally lived "down that road", which was on the Walnut Grove to Murphree Valley Road just South of Ellison CrossRoad. The site today is completely void of any structure, but it is a perfect home site with large old oak trees surrounding a bear spot where a house could have stood. If I were searching for her grave that is where I would start.

I have found a reference at Kindred for both Letty and for Lucinda in this Alexander family. They have both of them born 1800, with Letty died 27 Feb 1854, Pickens County, South Carolina, and Lucinda married to Jennings NIX and died 1857. Is it possible that this information is correct and that they were TWINS????????

I will keep it my way, but will keep a lock out for twins.

For the past several years I have been building a descendants tree for Jennings NIX, b 1803 in Georgia, married Lucinda (Letty) Alexander 1824 in Pickens District, South Carolina. In 1851-52 Jennings and his family moved West to Blount County, Alabama, where Luninda died in 1856. Jennings married a second time and had three additional sons. All of the families remained in the North Alabama area except for two sons that continued to move West.

But there is a reason for my posting on this board. I found Jennings and Lucinda in the 1850 census for Pickens South Carolina as follows:

KNIX, JENNIGS

	State:	SC	Year:	1850
County:	Pickens County	Record Type:	Federal Population Schedule
	Township:	Western Division	Page:	374
Database:	SC 1850 Federal Census Index

Western Division of the district of Pickens South Carolina enumerated by me, on the 27th day of July 1850, Thomas Lee

It is not possible to read the page number on the top right corner of the sheet because the sheet is placed so that section of the sheet is cut off. If you view the census at <ancestry.com> It is, however, image #6 of 160 in the Western Division of the South Carolina, 1850 Federal Census .

This came off of the http://www.cei.net/~cnix/fam01918.htm and is very close to the Alexander Book. The major difference is the acknowledgement of Jennings son William, who is NOT listed in the Alexander Book. This was the first time Ive have seen a date of death for Lucinda or a birth date for William. I am corresponding with this woman who is a direct descendant of Jennings, and who has done extensive research on this family. James Jennings Nix was the son of Daniel and Margaret Nix of Pickens District Eastern Division. He was born 1803 in Ga., and died 24 Feb 1885, Blount Co., Ala. He married 1824 to Lucinda Letty Alexander, b 1803 d 4 Aug 1856 Blount Co., Ala. Lucinda Letty Alexander was the daughter of David Alexander and Mary White. In a message dated 12/30/2003 12:52:22 PM Eastern Standard Time, daltonn@knology.net writes:

Bob, My question is simple but it may have some very complicated elements. Could Mary, the daughter of Daniel Murphree and Sarah be the Mary Unknown that married Daniel D. Alexander of Pickens South Carolina? The Old Pendelton District Data Base Project recently changed the listing from "Mary Unknown" to "Mary Murphree, the daughter of Daniel Murphree and Sarah Dempsey"

Beats me. I don't have any reason to think that it's true (or even likely) but the person who posted itmighthave some evidence for it. There arethree things about this that bother me:

(1) The website says the first three children were born in VIrginia beginning in 1778.That means we need an explanation for whyMary Murphree of central North Carolinamarried a Virginian and left North Carolina for Virginia for several years before joining the rest of her family in South Carolina.

(2) There is no Daniel Alexandermentioned in anyOrange/Chatham, NCrecords thatI can find.So how did he and Mary meet?

(3) The Pendleton censuses are somewhat bothersome. Notice that the oldest female inDaniel Alexander'shousehold in both 1800 and 1810 is under 45. Not a showstopper, but Mary Murphree had to have been born before 1765 if she had her first child in 1778. The 1830 census the website references is for a Daniel Alexander aged 30-40, with a wife 30-40, who can't be the same person. In 1840, though, there is an elderly Daniel Alexander with a wife 70-80.

Good luck.
