Mary C. Mosher - Feb 19, 2002   Shuler web page     THIS STORY CAME FROM MY AUNT CECIL HIS GRANDDAUGHTER. WHILE LORENZO WAS AWAY FIGHTING THE CIVIL WAR, MARY FRANCES THOUGHT LORENZO WAS DEAD. SO SHE MARRIED ANOTHER MAN ( BACK THEN I DIDN'T CARE ABOUT THIS STORY) HIS NAME SLIPS MY MIND WILL TRY TO FIND IT SOME WHERE, ANY WAY SHE WAS MARRIED TO HIM FOR 2 YR. BEFORE HIS DEATH AND HAD 2 CHILDREN BY HIM. SOON AFTER LORENZO RETURNED HOME TO HIS LITTLE MARY FRANCIS. THEY HAD MORE CHILDREN AS YOU CAN TELL BY THE DATES OF BIRTHS. HOW   THEY RECONSILED I DON'T KNOW BUT I SURE WOULD LOVED TO HEAR HER EXCUSE FOR THE 2 EXTRA CHILDREN AND THE GOSSIP FOR SURE. LORENZO ALWAYS REFERED TO MARY AS HIS LITTLE MARY. SHE WAS A VERY SMALL AND SHORT WOMAN. IT WAS SAID SHE WAS PART OR FULL INDIAN???MARY MOSHER

His occupation was a farmer. He never rose above the rank of private. His 11th battery Indiana was commanded by Capt. A Sutermeister.

Various affidavits were made by neighbors and war buddies. One was WILLIAM EDMONDS of Ft. Wayne. Affidavit signed on 7 Apr 1890. A commission buyer, he testified that he enlisted with Lorenzo and served with him. He states that on the march from Nashville (some accts. say Bushville) to Dillsburg Landing (some accounts say Pittsburg Landing)Tn. the latter part of March, 1862 to April 6, 1862, Lorenzo contracted a fever and was left in the rear. One account says he was off duty about two months.

JOHN COCHRAN, a moulder from Ft. Wayne testified that he belonged to the same 11th Indiana Battery. On the march to Shiloh, he said, about the first of March, Lorenzo got typhoid fever. Served with him three years. Lorenzo had dizziness, pain in his head, couldn't life. Still suffering when discharged.

ELI RAUK a Sgt. in the 11 Battery Indiana served same time as Lorenzo for three years. "Lorenzo was robust and healthy when entered Service. He got typhoid fever when in camp at Nashville due to exposure. "...that in a short time after Lorenzo contracted said fever, our Battery was ordered on the march to Shiloh, Tn. Claimant accompanying his Battery but growing worse of said fever. While on the march, he with several others was left back in hospital in a small town on the way. He was away from us for quite awhile and when he rejoined us he was a mere skeleton unfit for duty of any kind. he suffered at all times from dizziness or a swimming of his head, weak eyes, and some defect in his hearing. he was in this condition at our discharge and return home since which he has been growing gradually worse. Since our return home we have lived near neighbors. All the time seeing very frequently. I have often seen him stagger from said dizziness of his head and he can do but very little labor that requires stooping. i know that he is a temperate man and has been ever since his discharge.

LABAN J. RILEY of Ft. Wayne a machinist. Affidavit signed 29 Mar 1890. He was a member of the 11 Battery Indiana mustered in March 3, 1862, joining the Battery at Nashville, TN. "We laid at that place about 2 weeks after I joined the battery when we were put on a march for Dillsborough Landing Tn. when Lorenzo contracted the typhoid fever. He was left in a temporary hospital and the battery proceeded to Shiloh.

ISAIAH COLEMAN (aged 65) Ft. Wayne, Retired farmer. "I have known Shuler for at least 35 years and ever since the War, he has lived next neighbor to me. I know that he has to rely wholly upon his daily labor for a living, which i consider he is now almost entirely unable to do, by reason of catarrh and head troubles, rheumatism and heart disease. Some time ago he tried to harvest for me and was compelled to quit by reason o f the above complaints and shortness of breath. Claimant is a man of good moral habits and i am fully satisfied that said ailments could not have been the results of any carelessness or bad habits on his part. Claimant is a sober upright, honest industrious man and a good citizen in every respect."

Doctor's report in February 1901, Lorenzo aged 59. "Fairly well nourished; muscles are small, soft and flabby. Occupation - farmer. Hands show some work. We find he is somewhat debilitated from age. Shows premature age. he is debilitated probably the result of typhoid fever. The hearts action is feeble and irregular."

In Lorenzo's own words in 1891: I am the claimant in the claim for pension and make the following statement in compliance with your requirement of January 15, 1891. Our Battery did not have a surgeon and the only treatment i had and that was very little was by some doctor in a field hospital near Shiloh, Tennessee, whose name i never knew. I have never treated with any physician since my discharge and return home from the service, but have occasionally used patent medicines without much effect. For these reasons i can not furnish the testimony desired, but, if your Bureau requires any further testimony from Comrades or neighbors, I am satisfied I can supply the same on demand. (signed) Lorenzo Shuler

March 21, 1906: "I have had nasal catarrh 35 years gradually getting worse. Rheumatism for 30 years. I get it in hip and shoulder and legs. It runs from one place to the other. I have a distress which is located on both sides extend from breast bone to back bone. I have heart trouble. That it flutters - pain in front below short ribs. I feel aged. I have a bad cough. I cough up lots of matter from lungs." (at age 64). The doctor's comment: General appearance of claimant good. Well nourished. Cararrh. moves slowly. Nasal catarrh, slight deafness left ear, general muscular rheumatism, heart disease, bronchitis and senility.
