Personal History

Claud Nigel Hamilton[2] was born 10 November 1889[1] (registered in the district of St George Hanover Square, co. London).[2]

In 1907,[5] Claud became second lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment), and in 1909,[6] he transferred to the Grenadier Guards. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1912,[7] appointed aide-de-camp in 1915,[9] and promoted to captain later the same year.[10]

For distinguished services rendered during the war, Claud was decorated an Officer of the Order of the Crown of Italy[12] and received the Croix de guerre.[13]

On 3 March 1919,[14] Claud was appointed by the Prince of Wales to be Equerry-in-Ordinary to His Royal Highness.

On 1 February 1921,[16] Claud was appointed by King George V to be Deputy-Master of His Majesty's Household. He was also appointed by the King to be an Extra Equerry to His Majesty, on 19 May 1922, and Equerry-in-Ordinary, on 1 March 1924.[17]

Claud was appointed to multiple orders by the King :—

  • on 1 December 1914,[8] to be a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO).
  • on 22 May 1916,[11] to be a Member of the Fourth Class (from 1984 known as Lieutenant) of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO).
  • on 15 October 1920,[15] to be a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (CMG).
  • on 2 January 1933,[18] promoted to be a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO).

After the death of King George V, Claud was appointed by Queen Mary, on 20 July 1936,[19] to be Comptroller, Treasurer, and Extra Equerry to Her Majesty's household.

King George VI promoted Claud to be a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO), on 1 February 1937,[20] and to be a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO), on 9 June 1949.[21]

After the death of her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II appointed Claud, on 6 October 1953,[22] to be an Extra Equerry to Her Majesty.

Death and Probate

Claud died 22 August 1975[4] (registered in the district of Newbury, co. Berkshire).[3]
