Lily Victoria Smallridge was born on 19th July 1897 at South Brent in Devon. She was one of ten children of an agricultural labourer named George Smallridge and his wife Annie. Lily appears in the 1901 census living with her parents and siblings at 21 Church Street in South Brent. Lily's mother died in 1910, when Lily was only twelve years old. The 1911 census finds Lily and her father and siblings still living at Church Street in South Brent.

In 1920, aged 22, Lily married Harry Hutchings May, who was about 30 and from Plymouth. He had previously been married to Lily's older sister Blanche, who had died the previous year aged 26 leaving Harry looking after two small boys. Lily married Harry in the Plymouth area. There are two births in the 1920s in the Totnes district (which covered South Brent) of children called May with mother's maiden name Smallridge, which may well be their children. However, there was another May / Smallridge married in 1921 (which appears to have been Lily's sister Annie marrying Harry's brother William), so the birth certificates would need to be obtained to confirm which couple each child belonged to.

Harry died in 1956. Lily outlived him by over 32 years and died in 1988, aged 91.
