Who were the parents of Lewis Schiener Olmstead?

Although GOFA¹ did not originally list Lewis Schiener Olmstead as a son of Lewis Olmstead and Mary Ann Sharp, the evidence to support these parents is as follows:

1. On 28 Oct 1833, the elder Lewis Olmstead registered 8 yr old "Lewis Schiener", 7 yr old John Olmsted, and 5 yr old James H Olmsted as pupils at the Dutch Reformed Church school in New York. For each pupil he listed himself as the the parent.
2. In abt 1847, the elder Lewis Olmstead dies.
3. In the 1850 census, the younger Lewis is listed as son "Lewis Olmstead" in the household of the widowed Mary Ann, along with her other children.
4. In 1873, the younger Lewis testifies in court that he is the brother of John A. Olmstead, a known son of Lewis and Mary Ann Olmstead.
5. In the 1880 census, the younger Lewis is listed as HOH "Louis Olmested" in a household that includes his mother Mary Ann and is located next door to brother John Olmstead.
6. In the 1900 census, Lewis is listed as brother "Louis Olmstead" in the household of his brother George Olmstead.

Clearly there is a parental type of relationship here, but the use of the surname "Schiener" and the absence of son Lewis from the GOFA listing is troubling. Was he a biological relative or perhaps an adopted son? Pending evidence to the contrary, I will leave the younger Lewis as a son of Lewis and Mary Ann (Sharp) Olmstead. --Cos1776 21:16, 17 February 2014 (UTC)
