Lawrence Farley was the youngest of five children born to Laurence and Mary (Goff) Farley and was the only child of the five to have been born outside Ireland. His mother died when he was only a year old. Lawrence spent his childhood in Freeport, IL. In 1871, he came to Dakota Territory and took a preemption. After returning to Illinois, Larry returned to Dakota three years later and filed on the homestead, where he spent the rest of his life. On June 4, 1878, Larry married Elizabeth O'Connor. The couple had eleven children. Larry died on his homestead. He was preceeded in death by his wife; two infant children; his parents; two brothers, James Farley of Illinois and Patrick Farley of Beresford; and a sister, Anna Maher. He was survived by nine children and by his sister, Mary Jennings. He was buried at St. Joseph Cemetery at Emmet, South Dakota. |
