Laura Austin Norton was about 8 when her mother died. She was employed by the Joe Hanna General Store in Ireland for a number of years, after her husband died at age 22.

In 1918, she married Charles L. Miller, who was engaged in the construction business in Ireland for a time, later moving to Alto where he was in the saw mill business. After Charles Miller's death, she continued to be personally active in the cattle business until 1966, after the sudden death of her son, when her health began to fail due to arteriosclerosis. She was moved to a nursing home in Bastrop, Louisiana to be near a grandson; Charles E. Norton. She died at age 77, after contracting pneumonia. Both are buried in Alto Cemetery, Alto, Texas. Among those attending her funeral were her only surviving brother, George C. Austin, his daughter, Catherine Elm, and her sister-in-law, Ermine Austin.
