North Uist

Lachlan McLean and his family appear on the 1841 census as a farmer in the settlement of Tigharry. In his household are six children and his wife Margaret. Although at least one of his children had emigrated to Canada in 1849, Lachlan and Margaret are still in North Uist at the time of the 1851 census. He is a farmer of ten acres. Also in the household are daughter Marion, age 22, and son Angus, age 21.

Indications of Emigration to Canada

A Lachlan and Margaret McLean appear on the 1861 census in East Williams township, Middlesex County, Ontario. East Williams abuts the township of McGillivray, where daughter Catherine had settled with her family. In 1866 there is record of Angus McLean, a native of North Uist Scotland, resident of East Williams township, son of Lachlan McLean and Margaret McVicar, marrying. A descendant has a photograph of a log cabin on which her mother had written, "Ailsa Craig, Ontario, Canada. Old log house built by my great-grandfather Laughlin McLean over 90 years ago. Where my Dad, James Mclean was born on May 1, 1874."
