Kopel Broytman was born around 1822, son of Leyb Broytman and Khaya. He lived most of his life in Kishinev, capital of the Russian province of Bessarabia (and today the capital of Moldova). He appears in the Revision Lists (census-like documents) of 1848 and 1859, is married in 1862 (possibly for the third time), and has sons in 1865 and 1868. He may well have been born and died in Kishinev, but we don't have records of that. That his father was named Leyb is established consistently on the Revision Lists, the marriage index, and the birth records of two sons. That his mother's name was Khaya is indicated on the 1848 revision list where Kopel is head of household, living with his mother Khaya, "widow of Leyb". He is consistently identified as middle class. The name of his wife on various records varies, suggesting he may have been married three or four times. On the 1848 revision list, at age 26, he is listed as a widower living with his widowed mother. On the 1859 revision list, he has a wife named Beyla. In 1862 he marries Litsa, and the mother of his 1865 son is also Leytsa (close enough), but the mother of his 1868 son is Brana. (And when his son marries in New York in 1892, he identifies his parents as Kopel and Rachel.) Image Gallery
