BIOGRAPHY: http://www.taft.k12.ca.us/tuhs/alumni/March%208,%202004.html Scout Troop 29 enjoys camp-out in ghost town June, 1954 Taft's Daily Midway Driller

An overnight camp-out in a ghost town was the interesting experience enjoyed by members of Boys Scout Troop 29 recently, when the intrepid young boys accompanied by several adult leaders, explored Calico, long-defunct silver mining town near Barstow. The scouts slept in nearby caves, did their cooking and earned many points on several badges during the interesting trip.
Calico, which is renowned for its past glory during the days when silver was king, is reported to have had $80,000,000 worth of silver mined there. The Silver King gave $10,000,000 worth alone. The scouts went through Maggie's Mine while on their trip. The Ghost Town is being restored by Walter Knott of Knott's Berry fame, the boys learned.
The town was started in 1881, according to a brochure published on the history of the Calico and was razed by fire in 1887. The price of silver dropped and the town slipped into oblivion.
Making the trip were scouts Jimmie Meachem, Kenneth Bosworth, Sanford Culver, Clark Culver, Keith Knight, Carl Knight, Chris Cooper, Ross Cooper and Robert Tate. Scoutmaster W. Culver and his assistant Glenn Houghton led the Troop on the trek. Committee members on the camp-out were George Mezzo, Frank Meachem and C. I. Knight.
