With the death of Sister Kate Gossage, the nursing profession has lost a woman who in her time was one of it's brilliant members. Miss Gossage trained at Guy's Hospital, and was the gold medalist of her year. She came to South Africa at the outbreak of the Boer War as a nursing sister, and at it's conclusion remained in the country filling posts of various hospitals. She was night superintendent in the Port Elizabeth Hospital, Germiston, and the Rondebosch Hospital, Mawbray, for over three years was nursing sister at the Rand Aid Association. Doctors & patients alike testified to her skill and kindness, & to her sympathetic & careful treatment of all who came under her care. The Great War found her ready, and willing to help. She was Matron of the Red Cross hospital, Chester, and there was no doubt that strenuous time permanently impaired her health. She returned to Africa 1919, and took up private nursing, her patients are still her friends. Devoted to her church, she gave herself to the cause of Christianity, and no one will ever know the extent of her work for the sheer love of humanity. A member of the National Council of Women, & interested in every phase of women's work. Her friends will mourn deeply a loving and beloved woman.
