Julien married Marie Emelina, called Emelina, daughter of fellow Acadian Laisan Broussard, at the Grand Coteau church, St. Landry Parish, in August 1861. Their son Jean Théophile was born probably at Carencro in October 1863.

During the War Between the States, Julien served in Company K of the 2nd Regiment Louisiana Reserve Corps, a local unit raised in Lafayette Parish that fought against prairie Jayhawkers in the final months of the war.
