Julia Moles was born on 2nd March 1879 at St Ippolyts in Hertfordshire, daughter of a midwife called Fanny Moles, formerly Worbey, and her husband Thomas Moles, a mole and rat catcher. The family lived in the Blackhorse Lane area, right on the boundary with the neighbouring parish of Hitchin, and Julia was baptised at Hitchin. Julia appears in both the 1881 and 1891 censuses living with her parents and siblings in the Blackhorse Lane area of St Ippolyts. She was the ninth of ten children. Julia's father died in 1895, when Julia was sixteen years old.

In 1900, aged 21, Julia married William Dimmock, a bricklayer. They initially lived with Julia's mother at Osier Bed Cottage on Blackhorse Lane in St Ippolyts, appearing with her in the 1901 census. Two of William's younger brothers were also with the family on census night. Julia and William had a daughter called Fanny Elizabeth later in 1901, then a daughter called Maud Milicent in 1905.

In 1907 William's younger sister Emily was murdered at Camden Town in London. The case was never solved; the only person tried for the crime was acquitted.

Julia and William went on to have one more daughter, Minnie Lilian, in 1909. The 1911 census finds Julia, William and their three daughters living at 3 Blackhorse Lane, which was on the north side of the road and therefore in the parish of Hitchin. Julia's mother lived next door at number 5.

In October 1915, just over a year after the outbreak of the First World War, William volunteered for the army. He was 39 at the time. He was posted to France in April 1916, but was severely injured at Ypres in Belgium about a month later and was invalided home. He was taken to the War Hospital at Thorpe, just outside Norwich, which had been the Norfolk County Asylum until requisitioned for military use in 1915. William died there on 27th April 1917, aged 40. He was buried back at Hitchin and his name is included on the town's war memorial.

Julia survived him by over forty years but never remarried.

Julia's mother died in 1922.

At the outbreak of the Second World War Julia was still living at 3 Blackhorse Lane in Hitchin along with her daughter Maud.

Julia died in 1958, aged 79.
