The Shermans of Yaxley database gives a birth place of Rhode Island, which seems unlikely given the births of other siblings in New York. The other sources says Norway, but these sources are all secondary, and I can't tell if they are making an assumption, or if they are based on primary evidence.

In Alfred, N. Y., Feb 11th, 1880, of congestion of the liver, Mr. Josiah Sherman, in the 78th year of his age. He had for many years been a citizen of this town. He was highly esteemed, as his character was above reproach. For many years he had been a worthy member of the First Seventh-day Baptist Church of Alfred, and down to his last moments his faith in the Redeemer was unshaken.
