Facts and Events
Joseph is listed in the 1790 Census, in Wells ME, and at that time his shows 1male over 16, and 1 female. As his mother had signed over the family homesteadto Joseph, the people in this home would have been Joseph and his mother, Bethiah. Joseph does not appear in the 1800 census. But is name is on a 1798 taxlist, and his wife Abigail's death was reported in a 1803 Groton newspaper, soit is safe to assume Joseph removed to Vermont between 1799 and 1802. Hamilton Child writes, In an article published in 1887, for the "Gazetter of Caledonia and Essex Counties, VT", "Joseph Wormwood came to this town (Groton, VT), from Kennebunk, Me at an early day, married Sarah Page, and reared ten children, only two of who are living Melinda (Mrs. Russell Carter), of Michigan and Daniel." Who was still living in Groton, and could have been the one who was consulted for this information. Joseph disappears from the 1800 and 1810 censuses, and reappears in the 1820 census. According to the censuses, his children would be: (all dates are approximations) girl 1805, girl 1807, girl 1809, boy 1812,girl 1813, girl 1818, girl 1821, John 1823, Melinda 1826, and Daniel 1831.
